This is a photo record of the progress on my - to be - new abode, currently under construction

This was a period when Torsten, Christine and family were overseas in France. I was desperate to get the trusses (manufactured locally at Kairi ) installed before Torsten left because I wouldn’t have been able to help the crane operator fix them by myself and I wanted to get on installing the truss battens on my own.

Everything was affected by the weather – the trusses had to be left outside of the building site because the delivery trailer couldn’t risk backing into the site without getting bogged, and we had to wait for a reasonable day to actually get the crane here and commit to the installation.

The day came and we had a dry day for the installation. As you can see, Torsten didn’t shirk from getting up there and securing each truss in place, as did the very cooperative crane driver. It was nerve wracking stuff and I was very glad when it was over without incident. At the end of the day we had the skeleton of the house in place. So, the family headed off for France and the wet set in thwarting my ambitions to get the roof battens up and secured in time for their return.

If there’s one thing I’d do differently “next time” it’s that I’d farm out the roof and verandah battens and metal bracing and rafter installation to tradies. Whereas I had to scull-drag the work platforms every couple of metres, roofers, laden with a belt full of tools and fasteners, leap around on the roof frame like mountain goats (although they also have horrendous stories of the outcome of occasional slips). They would have done these jobs in a fraction of the time I took. I think even Torsten and Michael who did the verandah battens – much faster than me - on a working bee would generally agree with that statement.

The rain forced me indoors most days but I had plenty of work to do there shaping and drilling the kwila veranda posts
